In my role as the President of WfWP, I lead a Partnership of women’s civil organisations focused on the achievement of SDG 6 (Clean water and sanitation), together with SDG 5 (Gender equality), SDG 3 (Good health and well-being), SDG 2 (No hunger), and SDG 13 (Climate action). We are among the most devoted to bring water and sanitation to the most needy households, remote areas, rural schools; to support women farmers transition to climate-smart agriculture and active players on the carbon market; to train young water activists; to empower women water professionals; to advocate for waterwise production and consumption; to lobby for sustainable funding made available for women water projects, etc.

WfWP make a change at local, national, and regional levels in Africa, Americas, Asia, and Europe, as well as globally, by mobilizing women for the implementation of water projects prioritizing the needs and demands of women and girls in their communities, at the places they work and study, at their homes.

Different reports show that only 17% of women work in the water sector worldwide, incl. administrative jobs. Women’s water and sanitation needs are often underrecognized by various international, national, and local bodies. This is the reason why women are hardly ever represented at the opening sessions of conventions, why women discuss in separate women’s fora, and why women recommendations are only included in the final outcome after much insistence.

Getting financial support is another issue – not only for WfWP, but for all women organisations. That is why WfWP advocates getting women to higher decision-making bodies. Together with our Members and Partners, WfWP works to ensure that women get educated, trained, and empowered so they can get decent employment in the water sector.
